The first book in the planned Unpacking Genesis series, Foundations, offers 22 meditations on the critical first three chapters of the Bible. In Genesis 1–3 God reveals truths about himself, ourselves, and this world which lay the footing for understanding his kingdom and our place in it, the Saviour and how we may be saved, and so much in-between. It’s not too much to say that if we get these chapters wrong, we get the Bible wrong.

In Foundations, Pastor Peter Holtvlüwer offers a careful explanation and application of each passage in these chapters, seeking always to show what God’s purpose is and how that purpose leads us always to the Saviour Jesus Christ. Using other parts of the Bible to shed light on what the Holy Spirit has inspired here in Genesis, Holtvlüwer acts as a guide to show the reader how God’s revelation here is meant to impact how we understand God and ourselves, the meaning of life, the reason for daily work and weekly rest, the wonder of male and female, the beauty of marriage, the fall into sin, the Lord’s promise to save, and much more.

How does it work? Once you’ve prayed over and thought on the passage yourself, simply read the accompanying meditation to stimulate further reflection. Less than a 10-minute read, the meditation fleshes out the meaning and implications of the passage so as to improve your understanding and strengthen your faith, as the Lord blesses. Each chapter ends with around five reflection questions that can be very useful for group discussion or personal consideration.

Who is this book for? Any Christian, teenager and up! The language is down-to-earth, and conversational, making the meditations easy to understand. Foundations is suitable for individual, couple, or group Bible study.
