Foundations: Sermons on Genesis 1-3

(Tintern: LittleAngels Press, 2010/11) ISBN 978-0-9867274-0-5

These 13 easy-to-read sermons explain and apply God’s Word in a clear and practical way. The opening chapters of Genesis deal with life’s major questions: How did the world begin? Who is God? What role does science play in interpreting the Bible? What is the meaning of life? What are husbands and wives meant to do? What is the purpose of the Sabbath Day? How did sin enter this world? What is grace?

In a straight-forward and pastoral way, Rev. Holtvlüwer explores these and many other issues. Along the way he is careful to base his explanation on the text itself and that it is in keeping with all of Scripture. Of the utmost importance is that the pastor links each passage to Jesus Christ and places him and his saving work in the centre.

Readers have turned to Foundations for personal reflection, Bible study groups and also for public reading in church worship services (suggested liturgies are provided in an appendix).

What others have said:

Rev. Clarence Stam – Emeritus Minister of Cornerstone Canadian Reformed Church (Rev. Stam has since gone to be with the Lord)

What I like most about this book is that it presents us with a fine example of “textual preaching.” Textual preaching is academically sound, exegetically astute, and spiritually energizing. This is how it should be done, and I most heartily urge our membership to take and read this book.

Dr. Wes Bredenhof, Minster of the Free Reformed Church in Launceston, Tasmania

There are three reasons why I’m going to recommend this book to you. First, the author takes the biblical text seriously as a record of historical events. There is no capitulation here to Darwinism, theistic evolution, or anything of the sort. Second, Holtvlüwer constantly brings everything to a focus on Jesus Christ. These sermons are Christ-centered and therefore edifying and God-glorifying. Third, Foundations features clearly written prose. The author explains Scripture in a direct and easy-to-understand fashion.
