Headings 11 – 16 Briefly Explained

Each of the 150 Psalms is explained in the Study Resource, one psalm per chapter. We’ve set up each chapter in precisely the same format so you as reader can quickly navigate your way to the portions most useful to you. The template consists of 16 sub-headings (see the previous posts for Headings 1-4 and Headings 5-10).

I’ll briefly explain Headings 11-16 as follows:

11. New Testament Links

Are there any quotations or strong allusions to the psalm in the New Testament? These will be explained here. As well, key themes from the psalm that reappear in the NT will be pointed out and lightly touched upon for the interested reader.

12. Confessional References

The Psalms teach many truths about God and our salvation and texts from the Psalms are often cited beneath Reformed confessions in support of a given doctrine. Any such citation found in the Belgic Confession, the Heidelberg Catechism, or the Canons of Dort are mentioned and explained in connection with the doctrine confessed. This is especially useful for pastors, elders, and teachers who work with these confessions in their churches or schools.

13. Scriptural Themes

The following themes found widely throughout Scripture and known to be of great significance to believers are traced in each psalm. The theme is noted as present (and in which specific verses) or not. An index at the end of volume 3 of the Study Resource will aid the reader in tracking a given theme throughout the book of Psalms:

1. Creator/crpeter worsley photoeation

2. God’s Sovereignty

3. God’s Kingdom

4. God’s covenant of grace

5. God’s grace

6. God’s church

7. Antithesis

8. Man’s Depravity

9. Justification

10. Sanctification

11. Mission/outreach

12. Other (variable)

14. Application

This is pretty much what the heading implies: each author will suggest ways the psalm’s message can be applied in our present-day context, both for individuals and the congregation. Helpful for preachers, teachers, elders, and deacons (in making pastoral visits).

15. Occasions for Use

How and on what occasion might this psalm be used? Could it be sung or prayed under particular circumstances? Any special historical uses of the psalm will also be noted here.

16. Questions for Further Study

Five to seven questions to take the learning further and deeper will be suggested. These would be ideal in either the class room or a Bible study setting, to evoke discussion.

The three-volume Study Resource is in the final stages of pre-publication and is being planned for release in 2019. Sign up for email updates and for special pre-order prices!
